Give It To Me Right и
It Kills Me. Cive It To Me Right,
Island Boy
Papermag.com
The worst time for a cold is when it's cold out. But for singer Melanie Fiona, it can be just as rough inside, especially after five hours of rehearsal. "But it's good," she explains. "When you're sick, it's good to get moving and sweat it out." The 24-year-old has an ability to find wisdom in the worst experiences. Example: One night opening a show for Kanye West. "Everything had gone wrong. The mics weren't on, there was no sound coming out of the monitor," Fiona remembers. She was terrified of seeing West after the show, but he praised her for sticking it out. "He said 'Whatever you have to do to make those people out there remember you, never be afraid to do it.'"
Another challenge has been having a life outside of music while she's on the road: "I'm not even gonna lie, like it's OK. It's tough." She's written her experiences into her debut LP, The Bridge. Fiona credits her Guyanese parents and her childhood in multicultural Toronto for the infusion of reggae, hip-hop and classic soul that colors her music. Take "AyYo," a track that burns hot next to the album's cooler R&B numbers. "When I wrote it, I was struggling with what was going on at that time in my life, and I feel like people need a record like that," she says proudly. "People need an anthem."
